The Qualified Diesel Motor Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, servicing, repairing, maintaining,
and testing diesel-powered vehicles, machinery, and associated mechanical systems to ensure safe and efficient operation..
Key Responsibilities
This role involves carrying out preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, mechanical repairs, and inspections on a broad range of light commercial vehicles, heavy vehicles, diesel engines, and associated equipment. The position plays a critical role in maintaining operational reliability, minimising downtime, and ensuring all work is completed to the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer service.
Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults using diagnostic equipment and testing procedures.
Service, maintain, repair, and overhaul diesel engines, transmissions, steering systems, braking systems, and suspension components.
Dismantle and reassemble engines, transmissions, braking systems, steering, and suspension.
Perform scheduled maintenance and logbook servicing in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
Inspect vehicles and equipment to identify faults, wear, damage, or required repairs.
Remove, dismantle, repair, replace, reassemble, and test mechanical components and systems.
Carry out repairs to engine management systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, and hydraulic components.
Conduct road testing and operational testing to verify repair quality and performance.
Maintain accurate service records, repair documentation, and inspection reports.
Assist with roadside breakdown repairs and emergency response activities where required.
Support towing, recovery, and field service operations when necessary.
Mentor apprentices and assist in developing workshop skills and knowledge.
Liaise with customers, suppliers, and workshop personnel regarding repair requirements and progress updates.
Identify and report hazards, equipment defects, and safety concerns.
Follow all workplace health and safety procedures, policies, and instructions.
Assist with other workshop and maintenance duties as reasonably directed.
Qualification & Experience Required
Mandatory
- Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology, or equivalent recognised trade qualification.
- Minimum 4 years of relevant post-trade experience as a Diesel Motor Mechanic.
- Demonstrated experience servicing and repairing diesel engines, heavy vehicles, commercial vehicles, and associated equipment.
- Strong diagnostic and fault-finding abilities across mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Experience conducting preventative maintenance, repairs, and component overhauls.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, specifications, schematics, and workshop documentation.
- Experience using modern diagnostic equipment and workshop management systems.
- Current driver's licence with the ability to obtain or hold a Heavy Rigid (HR) licence.
- Ability to supervise, mentor, and support apprentices.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Effective communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred
- Queensland Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) Examiner accreditation or willingness to obtain.
- Experience with roadside assistance and recovery operations.
- MUST have hands-on experience working with 4WD vehicles and popular brands including: Toyota, Nissan, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu (as primary brands).
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Auto electrical diagnostic and repair experience.
- Air-conditioning servicing and repair experience.
- Experience working in regional, mining, transport, or heavy vehicle workshop environments.
- MUST have hands-on experience working with 4WD vehicles and popular brands including: Toyota, Nissan, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu (as primary brands).
